A. Narrative report of Research, Teaching, and Clinical Contributions


The research activities of the laboratory focus on the brain basis of developmental disorders of cognition, mainly through the study of animal models. In one model using mice, cortical lesions at birth or RNA interference produce cortical malformations, which in turn cause thalamic changes that are shown to correlate with deficits in temporal auditory processing, as a model of developmental dyslexia. In another murine model using recombinant inbred strains and congenic breeding, the relevant genes are sought the mutations of which lead to developmental cortical malformations. There is a big effort led by Glenn Rosen in the laboratory to map QTLs of complex brain traits in the mouse, and there is an ongoing research program to pinpoint the neural basis of the complex cognitive profile seen in Williams Syndrome. The research is funded by the National Institutes of Health’s Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Dr. Galaburda participates in the teaching activities of the Department of Neurology and organizes and contributes directly to the teaching activities of the Division of Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology. These involve medical students, medical and psychiatry residents, and behavioral neurology fellows. These include ward teaching rounds and conferences one month a year, teaching at clinical conferences throughout the year, professor’s rounds several times a year, a weekly clinical conference, a clinical/research weekly seminar, journal clubs, occasional grand rounds presentations, and weekly lab meetings. In addition, he has run a yearly Harvard CME course on Behavioral Neurology for clinicians since 1993. Dr. Galaburda visits on the in-patient neurology ward one month a year. He also sees outpatients in the Behavioral Neurology Unit (Kirstein Building) at BIDMC one and one-half days a week, specializing on disorders of language and cognition with a special emphasis on developmental disorders.
